PARISH NURSE

Who is our parish nurse?

Erica Brooks RN, BSN, FCN

Erica graduated from Creighton University School of Nursing with a bachelor’s degree in the science of nursing (BSN) in 1996.  She spent 4 years as an oncology nurse at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital, then a year doing hemodialysis before starting as a nurse for Dr. Welch at the  Retina Center of Nebraska in 2001.  She currently works full-time for Dr. Welch.  In 2006, she completed a parish nurse training course through St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island and has been developing a parish nurse ministry at FPC since then.

What is parish nursing?

Parish nursing, also known as faith community nursing (FCN) is a sub-specialty of nursing recognized by the American Nurses Association (ANA).  The ANA’s definition is a follows: "Faith community nursing is the specialized practice of professional nursing that focuses on the intentional care of the spirit as a part of the process of promoting holistic health and preventing or minimizing illness in a faith community.”

What does a parish nurse do?

A parish nurse serves his or her congregation according to their individual gifts and talents as well as to the amount of time they have to devote to service. Some parish nurses are paid by the church and some volunteer in their position.  Each program is different.  In Hastings, several churches have a parish nurse program and we gather to share ideas monthly as the Hastings Health Ministry Network.  We meet the first Tuesday of each month at 10 a.m. in the Medical Services Building at Mary Lanning. There, we have the opportunity to meet with Mary Lanning health promotion staff as well as staff from South Heartland District Health Department to become educated on community health issues,  to see what other parish nurses are doing and discover how we can support each other. In the past we have hosted community health events and even hosted state-wide Health Ministry Association conferences.

Parish Nursing At FPC:

The mission of the parish nurse ministry at First Presbyterian Church is to glorify God by providing health promotion and  prevention education, counseling on personal health management and referrals to community resources through a holistic ministry of body, mind and spirit in order to empower the congregation and the larger community to meet their health needs.

The parish nurse at First Presbyterian Church is a volunteer position. She is responsible to the board of Deacons and to the senior pastor. It’s budget falls under the deacons.

Current activities:

1. Blood pressure checks on the 4th Sunday each month from 9:15 to 10:30 a.m. in the Memorial Room.

2. Red Cross blood drive every 2 to 3 months.  The next blood drive is Monday, May 7.

3. Adult Forums on health topics. If you have an idea for a health forum, contact Erica.

4. Maintenance of the church’s automated external defibrillator (AED) and first-aid kits.

5. Visitation for those experiencing a health crisis and those who are homebound. This is done on a referral basis, so please let Erica know if there is an unmet need.
